Government Taxes and Charges on Imported Vehicles
How the government charges you on your imported car can be broken up into five categories
Import Duty
This is applied to the value of the car excluding the ocean freight, but includes any other costs incurred prior to shipping.
The current rates are:
– Cars more than 30 years old: Free
– Motorcycles: Free
– Cars less than 30 years old: 5%
– Caravans and trailers: 5%
Import GST
This is applied to the value of the car and all costs to the Australian port including freight and insurance
The current rate is 10%
Luxury car tax (LCT)
This is a tax applicable to high value cars only and it is addition to normal duties and GST
The value used is the GST inclusive vale and the current thresholds are:
-Fuel efficient vehicles (Combined consumption better than 7litres / 100km – A$ 77,565
-Other vehicles: A$ 68,740
The current LCT rate is 33%
This is calculated only on the value above the threshold
